Late Dr. I. M. Chalana

Dr. Inder Mohan Chalana popularly known as I. M Chalana, the former CMO, civil hospital, Fazilka is one of the most dedicated, sincere, punctual and honest personality of the tiny city, Fazilka. Although, he has now left this mortal world forever yet his decency towards common people, love for poor, needy patients; honesty, sincerity & integrity towards government duty and social service for the city as well as surrounding area’s people and his commitment for the family can never be forgotten. Such doctors are rare and unforgettable. Fazilka city has lost a gem on 1st July 2007 when a cardiac arrest raided on Dr. Chalana when he was on duty, serving the citizens of Fazilka.
Why Favorite?
His elder sister Ms. Veena Chalana, a retired lecturer says that he was not only my most loving brother but the favorite of the city people. Why favorite? She responds that he was honest and dedicated from the core of his heart and helped the needy even from his pocket. He was punctual, can reject his morning breakfast, but there was no question of his being delayed on duty. He did never harm to anybody whether he was poor even despite the pressure from the higher authority. He was the follower of Hanuman ji and never skipped going to temple regularly despite being his busy schedule. Even when he had been out of home, he never forgot visiting temple and prayed.
His work impressed all
Mrs. Neena Chalana, wife, Dr. Chalana says that just before his passing away, when he was deputed to nearby city Jalalabad for some time, the people of that area too were so impressed to his work and service they too wanted his posting there but the citizen of Fazilka didn’t let him join there. Even a battle at political level had started who brings Dr. Chalana in their respective city.
Academic Qualification
Born in Fazilka in the year of 18th June, 1950 and married in the year of December 1991, Dr. I.M Chalana was the alumni of Govt. Sr. Sec School, Fazilka, M.R Govt. College, Fazilka and Sampurna Nand Medical College, Jodhpur. After earning his B. Sc part-11, he qualified the entrance test for MBBS and, in the year of 1978, he was admitted at Jodhpur College, one of the best medical colleges of the region that time. After completion his graduate in Medicine, he joined the same institute for service. Later, he joined Gulabdevi Hospital, Jalandhar where he had vast opportunities to grow but, his love for Fazilka city had brought him back. Then, in the year of 1978, he joined civil hospital, Dabawali Kala, a nearby village. Afterward, he joined civil hospital, Fazilka in the year of 1980. Also, he worked at DMC, Ludhiana and at Slum area dispensary at Fazilka for some time.
Incharge of Pulse Polio
Because of his dedication and sincerity towards duty, he was assigned the charge of Pulse Polio Scheme ever since its inception at civil hospital, Fazilka. He has the dream not a single child be remained unchecked. He, until the end of time, motivated the NSS volunteers to perform their duty sincerely as he himself did. He always said, if you wish the other follow you, be a model first, work yourself, then you will see how the other follow you. It’s only your actions which will inspire others, were the buzz words of Dr. Chalana.
Honour
There might be hardly any social or religious society that has not honoured Dr. Chalana for his humanitarian services to the society. He had served at the health department for 29 years until his demise. His patients adored him as he did neither misguide anybody nor do harm with the patients despite the pressure from the higher authority.

Achievements in Sports
Dr. Chalana was the sports lover. During his study at school or college level, he remained the champion of the Badminton (1973-74) the champion of Table Tennis (1974-75) apart from his ardent love for carom board. Even during service at hospital, he spared time for sports.
All-rounder
Dr. Chalana was the ardent reader of books of every type. In college days, he loved to pen down short stories. His general knowledge always remained up-to-date as his two daughters Sony and Nony- both students of Sacred Heart Convent School, Fazilka are the testimony as they both loved to discuss every topic with papa because they knew that they could sort out their problems with Dr. Chalana.

- He was one of the founder members of Rotary Club, Fazilka
- He remained general secretary of Recreation Club, Fazilka
- He remained the secretary of IMA (Indian Medical Association)

Civil hospital, Fazilka is going to celebrate its century in the year of 2009. Dr. Chalana had served 26 years in this hospital, the ¼ time of its existence. When he left this mortal world, he was the CMO of this institute. May he participate in hospital celebration! But who can ask the MIGHTY GOD- why he calls people who are needed here, in this moral world.
